Basically, how much leeway do I have with how I use a deed poll? If I defined my name as Em / Emma or vice-versa, would I be able to use the other on things like railcards and bank accounts fairly easily, or are they distinct enough that people will generally get awkward?
Also, for those of you who did/didn't change your title on your deed poll, how much of a difference did it make to how easily you could put a new one down / remove an old one elsewhere?

Hmmm, I'm not sure what you mean with the Em/Emma? Are you saying that if you changed it to Emma would you be able to use Em on railcards etc.? In which case I'm not entirely sure you can.
I went through the UK Deed Poll service and it cost me £54. There is a post somewhere in the Trans board that gives you info on how to change it for less or even free.
I also changed my title as well as my name. I have had a few odd looks from people but generally no one's questioned it when I've gone to change things. As long as you have your Birth certificate with you or some sort of ID with your old name on then it will prove to banks and things that you are who you say you are and that the change of name is legal etc.
I haven't had any problems with anything anyway, may depend on where you are.
The HM Revenue and Customs (Tax office) have a special number that Trans people can ring in confidence to change their details, though without a GRC you won't be able to change the gender on Government stuff. Unfortunately I don't have this number to hand I'm afraid. But I just rung the normal Tax Office number, explained the situation and they gave me the number no problems. Also you will have to send copies of your Deed Poll (I also sent copy of birth certificate) to an address in Newcastle so they can issue you with a new National Insurance Card with your new name on.
Hmmm... that's all I can think of right now, but if I think of owt else that might be useful to you I'll let you know.

Let's be clear: deed polls do not change titles. Only names.
You are entitled to be known by a "known alias", generally a shortened version of your name. Somebody named Anthony might be known to everyone as Tony, for example. You can include your known alias on railcards, job applications, bills, even official letters. Banks will have house rules on the use of known aliases, but there's nothing in law that prevents them from using one.
The only things on which you can't use a known alias in place of your full legal name are passports, benefits/tax, anything issued by a registry office or on the electoral roll.
