Coalition for Marriage Equality
Together with OutRage! and the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association we formed a coalition of organisations to campaign for the legalisation of same sex marriage. We have supported the passing of the Civil Partnerships Bill, with a hope that it will give us access to more social and legal freedoms.
We were the only group of young people that submitted an official response to the Government's White Paper consultation. Which can be read here:

"We support only the principle of equality. We recognise that Marriage (as an institution) has historically contributed to the oppression of women and that many people - gay and straight - are uncomfortable with it for that reason. What we reject is the principle that there should be separate laws for same- and opposite-sex couples. Lesbian and gay people should not be banned from marriage, and heterosexuals should not be barred from civil partnerships," said Brett Lock, a spokesperson for the group.
The Coalition also believes that civil partnerships can bring relief and provide protection to other non-traditional couples, such as two sisters who have shared a home for many years. However, by barring lesbian and gay people from marriage it relegates them to second-class status and sends a signal that their relationships are less "special" and valued less than heterosexual ones.
The Coalition calls on the government to provide compelling reasons why lesbian and gay couples should be governed by different laws to their heterosexual neighbours. "It leaves the door wide open for future discrimination," added Lock.
Groups who have already signed up to the coalition include OutRage!, the Queer Youth Alliance, the Gay & Lesbian Humanist Association, the Lesbian & Gay Christian Movement, Young Lesbian & Gay Christians, the Metropolitan Community Church (Manchester), the Jewish Gay & Lesbian Group, Scotsgay Magazine and the Durham University LGBT Association. Other groups are in the process of joining. The Coalition welcomes inquiries from all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender groups, clubs, organisations, businesses and association towards joining the coalition for equality. Gay-friendly, straight and general Human Rights groups are also encouraged to join.
