I was watching the tyra banks show and she had a show about racism in the gay/lesbian community, I didn't realise that it was an issue as I thought that as a community we were open and non-judgemental as we don't want to be judged ourselves.

You can have homophobic black people, you can have racist gay people. Being open-minded about one issue doesn't make you open-minded about everything, unfortunatly.

This is where you make a mistake.
You assume that some kind of lobotomised universality of opinion springs from the fact that all homosexuals have one thing in common.
the notion of "community" doesn't really have a positive impression on me either.

I think you'll find that there's racism in almost all 'communities': the people in these kind of collective only need share one common factor (in the 'gay community' it is, of course, sexuality), not viewpoints or prejudice (& lack thereof). I’ve met many racist black; white; asian; gay; straight people, gays who hate bisexuals etc. The people who make up these 'communities' are individuals with their own thoughts and prejudices: lumping people together doesn't really give an accurate view of things.
Also, I don't think anyone can honestly say that they're 100% non-judgemental in every aspect of their lives...

I think it might be an idea to look at the 'gay scene' as that is the predominant aspect most people first encounter when they step out into the 'gay community'.
There is definatley an element of quite overt 'sexual racism' lingering in the air. You only have to log onto 'gaydar' or 'fitlads' to see tons of profiles that say 'not asians or 'no blacks' which really isn't anyting short of racist if you add me. This is growing increasingly common. Also in a lot of the traidtionaly working class cities out on the scene I've seen a lot of racism displayed from the bouncers outside clubs who turn away groups of black and asian gay men.
Obviously racism is to be found everywhere in society but it is often more of a surprise when you stumble upon it in places that only exist because they have demanded tolerance and acceptance themselves. Due to homophobia in many ethnic/religious minority groups making it harder for black/asian queers to come out of te closet, the 'gay community' and 'gay scene' is predominatley 'White' - you only have to go out onthe scene somewhere like Newcastle to realise there are only a handful of non-white faces to be seen out and about. Although in the bigger cities I think people are intergrating and in some places there is now a representative number of people from all ethnic backgrounds 'out' on the scene and active in the gay community. There are lots of happy asian queers in Birmingham!
Callum makes a very valid point about the notion of a 'gay community'. I don't dispute that it exists but it is more complex and disorganised than the picture that is commonly painted. In general the visible and vocal 'gay community' oinly really consists of the gay scene, the gay business sector, events (including Pride/Mardi Gras, gay personalities (like Sir Ian McKellen or Elton John), charities, campaigning groups and entities such as QYN. Oh and let us not forget Hairdressers and Trolley Dollies!
