Formerly named 'Manchester Mardi Gras' which ran for serval years, a long time before it's London counterpart, It was re-named 'GayFest' in 2000 after a row between council leaders and bar owners.
GayFest is probably the second biggest event after London, and it has an awful lot on show. The festival now runs for over a week with parades, vigils, firework display's, markets, street parties, Live Music, as well as the National Mr Gay UK, and Miss Lesbian UK contests. Although it has become mainly Bar orientated in the past few years with more events taking place indoors

Entry to most gayfest events is free of charge with a small £2 donation, at the end of the festival you can enjoy the 'pinkworks' an indoor musical spectacular which brigns the weekend to an amazing end, entry to the pinkworks is around £15 and tickets are on sale from most major scene outlets, bars and queer press and also from the gayfest website.
